Founding Principal
Michael grew up the youngest of six children and was raised by his loving parents, Edward and Doris Gayles, on the urban east side of Buffalo, NY. He graduate Magna Cum Laude from the University Of Notre Dame with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science. He then went on to earn an M.D. form Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. After a period of deep reflection, Michael decided to pursue his dream of impacting the hearts and minds of children as an educator.
Dr. Gayles started his career as an educator at North Dallas High School, where he taught science and coached swimming, diving, tennis, and cross country. He moved out of the classroom to support North Dallas as a cross-curricular instructional coach (TAP Master Teacher). As part of the leadership team, he helped NDHS achieve an Acceptable state rating for the first time in 10 years.
His desire to broaden his educational influence led Michael to pursue Principal Certification and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership (Urban) from Southern Methodist University in conjunction with Teaching Trust. He was hired as an assistant principal at TW Browne Middle School and helped Browne move from one of the lowest rated middle schools in the state of Texas to earning a Met Standard Rating and four academic Distinctions.
In 2016, Dr. Gayles assembled a talented team to submit a school design proposal for Dallas ISD’s competitive choice school initiative. IGNITE Middle School was selected from among many strong candidates. IGNITE was founded on the Core Belief that the most important educational resource available to child is that child’s own potential. When we IGNITE and focus that potential, every child becomes an unrelenting learner and an unstoppable force for good in the world. This Personalized Learning middle school, with a focus on Career Exploration and Passion-Driven Learning, will open for the first time in August 2018.
In his free time, Michael enjoys swimming, running with his dogs, reading science fiction, and exploring the Dallas dining scene with his lovely wife Cheryl.
